AsteriskNOW, A Book By Packt Publishing, Prelude To A Review.

I just started reading a book published by Packt Publishing, “AsteriskNOW” by Nir Simionovich. From the first glance or first thumb through, it is like looking at a meal that is visually satisfying. Well laid out and spiced up where necessary with real world examples.
As you know I have been a AsteriskNOW fan for very long time. I attest without any hesitations, That AsteriskNOW by Digium filled the gap left by what then Asterisk@home project when it got acquired by another party. For what ever the reason, I chose AsteriskNOW and was very happy with the decision, when the news came out that TrixBox (Asterisk@Homes new name) came with built in call home features. (Did TrixBox Trick You?) Ever since I have advocated AsteriskNOW for projects that deemed most suitable and a full blown installation of Asterisk seemed unnecessary.

Back to the book, and I will wet your appetite with the list of contents that I am devouring right now with a satisfaction that you only get from a good book.

I will be writing about the book as soon as I am done with reading but if you find the list of content is enough to convince you, you can get the book from Packt Publishing. It is also available in PDF format for all those tree loving AsteriskNow fans out there. For the paper loving people like me, Packt is offering free shipping to UK,US, Europe and selected Asian countries.

Free VOIP international calls : Pakistan Included by Parrot Media

Hi,

Recently, there has been a tremendous increase in Israeli voip companies and they being offering free voip phone calls worldwide. Few days ago we talked about Spikko, and now we have found yet another voip company offering free calls : Parrot Media.

Parrot Media is a recently launched voip service in its beta phase. Parrot Media is ad-based voip service. They are offering free voip phone calls to almost all countries in lieu of advertisement. They show you a small advertisement, which I think does not bother us as long as we are getting free calls. All domestic and international calls are totally free.

Parrot Media even covers destinations like Pakistan, Cuba, Bangladesh, UAE (Dubai). Calling rates being so high for these destinations, by providing free calls Parrot Media is sure to get high hits.

However, India is not included by Parrot Media. But for Free PC to Phone calls readers we have some other posts for calling India free viz. Free 60 minutes to India, Cheap (2.9cents) calls to India by Lingo and many others.

Parrot Media is actually offering Free Phone to phone calls. So, you need to have either a mobile or landline to make free calls via ParrotMedia. To make free voip phone calls -

1. Visit Parrot Media.
2. Register with Parrot Media by filling your details. A confirmation email will be sent to you.
3. You can log in. The whole registration process takes no more than 2 minutes.
4. In your account interface, you have the option to enter your phone number, and number you want to call.
5. You will be shown the duration for which your call will last. For calling landlines it is 5 minutes, for mobile phone it is 2 minutes.
6. Once you click “call”, your phone will ring and they will connect you to your destination.

In the future they have plans to extend duration of calls by interacting with another ad during the call.

Parrot Media also have some other plans of launching -:

  • Free SMS
  • Wake up call
  • Recent calls list
  • Address book

Overall, Parrot Media is in a way similar to globe7 in its earlier days when they were also giving free calls by watching videos. I guess if they keep giving free calls, Parrot Media is sure to get a huge success.

Neat Use of Mobile Messaging

We like to see a great use of the technology we use and sell everyday and we think Nike have come up with a great idea.

They have launched a new service called Nike PhotoiD that aims to tap into the habits of the digital generation and the “growing expectations of consumers to customise their lives”. Nike PhotoiD employs technology that analyses the dominant colours of pictures taken on mobile phones.

Nike fans across Europe can now take pictures of brightly coloured subjects, such as street graffiti or clothing, and send a multimedia message to the service. In return, they will get a picture of a shoe customised to the main two colours in the shot.

PhotoiD designs will be mapped onto Nike’s classic 1985 Dunk high-top basketball sneakers.

Nike described the service as a “watershed moment in mobile campaign activity”.

“Where past use of MMS in mobile marketing campaigns has typically focused on short-term, one-way interactions between brand and consumers, Nike PhotoiD opens a genuine creative dialogue between the brand and its audience,” said Paolo Tubito, the director of brand connections for Nike Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Overall a very simple idea but one that will have todays generation of mobile users buying in more closely to the Nike brand which for Nike is a great marketing idea.

We saw the origional article over on the Guardian site here

Though voip providers keep on giving free calls, but these don’t last for too long. Large number of people in US, Canada, Australia are switching from regular phones to voip phones. They don’t mind spending few bucks if they get unlimited free calls or cheap calls to their destination specially to India.

Lingo voip service is just apt for these people. They are one of the leading voip provider with large customer base. These days they are running a large number of promotions. Lingo is offering unlimited free calls to about 22 countries which include US, Canada. Apart from this they are also offering cheap calls to India costing 2.9 cents/minute. I guess this is by far cheaper than many other voip providers. Calls to Bangladesh are charged at same rate of 2.9 cents.

Talking about other plans by Lingo Voip service.
